The surprising insight here is that the singular word "seed" in God's promise to Abraham isn't just a linguistic detail; it's a deliberate signpost pointing specifically to Christ. Paul highlights this to show that the promise wasn't meant for just any descendant, but for one unique individual who would bring blessing to all nations. This emphasizes that God's grand plan of salvation, even in ancient times, was always centered on Christ.
Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul argues that God's promises to Abraham weren't a temporary agreement, but something deeper and enduring, which the law couldn't nullify. He emphasizes this by pointing out that the promise was made not just to Abraham, but to his "seed," specifically highlighting the singular form of the word "seed" to signify Christ as the singular recipient and embodiment of that promise. This sets up his argument that since the promise was centered on Christ, it transcends the limitations of the Mosaic Law and extends to all who are united with Christ by faith.
Did you know that the difference between 'seed' and 'seeds' could change everything? Paul certainly thought so! He dives into the precise wording of God's promise to Abraham, revealing a profound truth about who is truly included.
The Singular Seed
Paul zeroes in on God's promise to Abraham, recorded in Genesis. God didn't say, 'And to your seeds' (plural), but 'And to your seed' (singular).
This is a crucial point because it shows that the grand promises made to Abraham weren't just for his biological descendants, but were ultimately focused on and fulfilled in Jesus. It narrows down the vast scope of Abraham's descendants to the one person who unites all believers.
If the promise was made to Abraham's 'one seed,' Christ, how does that connect to us? Paul shows that our inclusion in God's promises hinges entirely on our connection to Him.

United in Christ
Paul's argument isn't just about identifying Christ; it's about how we, as believers, become part of that promise.

In this context, it refers to the seed or descendant promised to Abraham. Paul emphasizes the singular nature of this descendant as Christ, who is the ultimate fulfiller of the Abrahamic promise.

This highlights that the core promise predates and transcends the Mosaic Law, finding its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus.
c. 2000 BC

Following Solomon's reign, the united kingdom of Israel splits into two: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. This division highlights internal strife within the lineage.

Assyrian Exile of Northern Kingdom
The Assyrian Empire conquers the northern kingdom of Israel, exiling many of its inhabitants. This event further complicates the identity of Abraham's 'seed'.

This verse contains the foundational promise to Abraham, stating 'in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed,' directly linking to the singular 'seed' mentioned in Galatians.
Genesis 22:18This passage reiterates the promise, saying 'and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,' providing the specific wording Paul uses to argue for 'Christ' as the singular 'offspring'.
Romans 4:13Paul here echoes the same argument, explaining that the promise to Abraham wasn't through the law but through the righteousness of faith, highlighting how it was given to Abraham and his 'seed,' aligning with the focus on Christ as the heir.
Romans 9:7-8This passage also explores Abraham's 'seed,' clarifying that not all descendants are true offspring, but only those through Isaac, which parallels Paul's argument in Galatians for a specific, singular line of descent.
John 11:52This verse, spoken by Caiaphas, prophesies that Jesus would die 'not for the nation only, but also that he might gather together the children of God who are scattered abroad,' demonstrating a prophetic understanding of Jesus as the unifying 'seed' for all peoples.

- This verse is parenthetical. The covenant of promise was not "spoken" (so Greek for "made") to Abraham alone, but "to Abraham and his seed"; to the latter especially; and this means Christ (and that which is inseparable from Him, the literal Israel, and the spiritual, His body, the Church). Christ not having come when the law was give…
vincentGalatians 3:16: "Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ."
The course of thought is as follows. The main point is that the promises to Abraham continue to hold for Christian believers (Galatians 3:17). It might be objected that the law made these promises void. After stating that a human covenant is not invalidated or added to by any one, he would argue from this analogy that a covenant of God is…
