The Bible says God judges us 'according to our works.' But does that mean our good deeds earn our salvation? Let's unpack this crucial distinction.
This verse states God will 'render to each one according to his works.' This doesn't mean our actions are the reason for our salvation or condemnation, but rather the standard by which our inner character and allegiance are revealed.
Works as a Mirror
Think of works not as the currency for salvation, but as the evidence on a balance sheet. They reflect what's truly in our hearts and who we've truly followed.
- Revelation, Not Transaction: God's judgment isn't a transaction where He buys our salvation with good deeds. Instead, our deeds reveal our hearts' true master.
- Inner Reality: Whether we follow God or self, our actions will be the undeniable proof.
This is why the Apostle Paul, even while emphasizing justification by faith, can also speak of judgment according to works. The works aren't earning the salvation; they are revealing the reality of whether one has truly embraced God's saving grace through faith.
