Revelation 20:12

It's easy to focus on the "great and small" meaning everyone is judged, but notice the separate mention of the "book of life." This isn't just about our deeds proving we're worthy or not; it highlights that our standing before God is determined by whether our names are in that specific book, with our works then serving as the evidence of that inclusion.
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following the defeat of Satan and the final judgment of evil, John witnesses the ultimate reckoning for all humanity. Every person, regardless of status or size, stands before God's throne to be judged. The opening of various books, including the book of life, signifies a comprehensive and detailed examination of every deed done in life.
Imagine a courtroom where every single person who has ever lived stands before the ultimate Judge. Revelation 20:12 paints this picture, reminding us that no one is excluded from this moment.
This verse makes it crystal clear: all the dead, regardless of status, age, or perceived importance ('small and great'), will stand before the throne. This isn't a selective trial; it's a universal reckoning.
This universality is profound:
Two types of books are opened: one detailing our actions, the other recording who belongs to God. What does this dual record reveal about God's judgment?
The imagery of 'books' and 'the book of life' reveals the basis and the outcome of the judgment.

Understand the original words
thanatos · Greek Noun
The state of being separated from physical life; in Scripture, it often refers to physical cessation of life or the spiritual alienation from God. It is frequently personified as an enemy to be defeated by Christ.

Psalm 69:28This verse speaks of names being blotted out from the book of life, directly connecting to the concept of an important register of the redeemed mentioned in Revelation.
Matthew 25:31-46Jesus' parable of the sheep and goats vividly illustrates a final judgment based on actions and their eternal consequences, echoing the 'judged according to their works' theme in Revelation.
