Paul's "thanks" here isn't just politeness; it's the bedrock of his entire message. He's not just thanking God for the Romans, but specifically through Jesus Christ, highlighting that all their faith and spiritual life flow through Christ's mediation. This underscores that even our expressions of gratitude are rooted in Jesus' work for us.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is beginning his letter to the believers in Rome, and before diving into his main theological points, he expresses his deep gratitude and affection for them. He assures them that he has been praying for them and longs to visit, as their strong faith is already widely known and admired throughout the Roman Empire.
Before diving into deeper theological truths, Paul starts with a thank you. What does this reveal about his approach and the nature of Christian community?
Paul begins his letter to the Romans not with a command or a stern warning, but with heartfelt thanksgiving. The word 'First' signals this priority. For Paul, expressing gratitude for the faith of others is not just a polite opening; it's foundational. It acknowledges God's work in them and sets a tone of love and mutual respect before addressing any potential challenges or complex doctrines. This approach reminds us that building up the church often starts with recognizing and celebrating God's grace at work in one another.
The faith of the Roman believers wasn't just a private matter; it was 'spoken of throughout the whole world.' What made their faith so remarkable?
Paul specifically thanks God because the faith of the Roman church was widely known. This wasn't about boasting, but about recognizing the impact of their genuine faith. In the bustling, diverse capital of the Roman Empire, their commitment to Christ stood out. This fame served multiple purposes: it validated the gospel's power, encouraged other believers far and wide, and likely served as a testament to God's faithfulness in establishing His church even in the heart of pagan culture. Their faith was a living testimony that resonated beyond their immediate community.
Paul doesn't just thank God; he thanks God 'through Jesus Christ.' What does this mediation signify for our worship?
The phrase 'through Jesus Christ' is crucial. It underscores that all our access to God, whether in prayer, praise, or thanksgiving, is made possible through Jesus. He is the divine mediator. Our thanksgivings aren't offered directly but are presented to the Father via Christ's finished work. This highlights the profound reality that our relationship with God is built on Christ's sacrifice and intercession. It means our worship is not only accepted but is given its very access to the throne of grace because of who Jesus is and what He has done.
