It’s easy to skim over the numbers here, but the point of “myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands” isn’t just to say there are lots of angels. It’s a poetic way to express a multitude so vast it defies calculation, emphasizing their immense number in direct contrast to the specific, redeemed individuals whose song we just heard.
Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
English Standard Version (ESV)
John has just witnessed the Lamb, Jesus, worthy to open the scroll and its seals, leading to the song of the redeemed elders and living creatures. Now, the vision expands to include an immense angelic host joining this heavenly worship, surrounding the throne and its attendants in a powerful, unified chorus. This scene emphasizes the cosmic scope of Christ's redemption and the universal adoration He receives from all creation, both earthly and heavenly.
Imagine standing before the throne of God, surrounded by beings beyond count. What does this vast gathering reveal about His glory?
John's vision in Revelation 5:11 presents an overwhelming number of angels joining in worship. The phrases 'myriads of myriads' and 'thousands of thousands' aren't meant to be exact figures, but rather to convey an incomprehensible multitude.
Why would angels, who never needed redemption themselves, join in singing about the Lamb's sacrifice?
Revelation 5:11 reveals that countless angels surround the throne, the living creatures, and the elders, all lifting their voices. This participation by the angelic host is profound.
