Here's a key insight from that verse: The prophets and apostles, in all their inspired work, weren't just writing for their own time or even for the angels; they were speaking directly to us today, revealing divine truths that even heavenly beings deeply desire to understand. This means Scripture is a living, breathing message from God, meant to connect us across millennia.
It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter's reminding believers that the prophets of old didn't fully grasp the implications of their own prophecies about Christ's suffering and glory. They were faithfully passing down God's message, but it's through the apostles' preaching, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that the full revelation has finally come to light for us. This perspective helps us appreciate the immense privilege and responsibility we have in receiving the Gospel.
Imagine trying to understand something so profound, even heavenly beings strain to get a clear view. That's the kind of revelation unfolding here!
Peter is talking about the Old Testament prophets and their deep search for understanding.
The Prophets' Quest
They foretold the coming Messiah, the suffering, and the glory that would follow. They searched and inquired diligently, trying to grasp the meaning and the timing of these events. It was revealed to them, but not fully in their lifetime. They understood that it would happen, but not to whom it would happen in such a personal way, or the full implications of God's salvation plan.
The Angels' Longing
Even angels, who have a heavenly perspective, are amazed and long to look into these salvific events. Their longing highlights the sheer wonder and depth of God's redemptive work through Christ, something that continues to astound the heavenly realms.
The incredible truth is that the message proclaimed to you today was the ultimate goal of ancient ministries, both human and angelic.
This is a mind-blowing concept: the prophets, and even the angels, were looking forward to your salvation.
