Why does God call the boastful 'fools'? What's so foolish about boasting?
The verse confronts those who are overly confident in their own power and achievements. The original Hebrew word translated as 'fools' or 'boastful' carries a sense of moral corruption and insolence, not just a lack of intelligence. It describes someone who acts defiantly and arrogantly.
The Illusion of Power
The phrase 'lift up your horn' is a powerful metaphor. Animals, especially horned ones, toss their heads and horns to display strength, dominance, and aggression. When applied to humans, it signifies an arrogant confidence in one's own power, status, or military might.
God's message here is clear: this kind of self-reliant pride is ultimately foolish. It's a defiance against God's sovereignty, an arrogant assumption that one's power is ultimate and unchallengeable. History and God’s Word show this pride always leads to a fall.
