It's easy to skim over the phrase "in the thoughts of their hearts," but it reveals that God doesn't just scatter people by external force. He actually dismantles their pride and their destructive plans right from the internal source of their arrogant imaginations. This shows God's power isn't just about grand displays, but also a deep insight into the human heart and its deepest motivations.
He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
English Standard Version (ESV)
