Psalm 73:3-12

What does Psalm 73:3-12 mean?

The psalm starts by revealing a surprising vulnerability: the psalmist, a person of faith, confesses to feeling envy for the wicked. This isn't just a passing thought, but a powerful temptation that nearly shook his footing, highlighting how the outward success of those who disregard God can be a profound test of our own trust.

For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Psalm 73:3-12 means

The psalmist Asaph is grappling with a deep crisis of faith, questioning God's justice because he sees the wicked thriving while the righteous suffer. This verse reveals the initial spark of that struggle: the painful envy he felt when observing the apparent success and ease of those who disregarded God. He goes on to describe the outward signs of their prosperity and arrogance, which nearly led him to abandon his faith entirely.

The Shock of Wicked Prosperity

Have you ever looked at someone living a life that seems completely out of sync with God's ways, yet they seem to have it all? That's exactly where the psalmist Asaph finds himself.

This verse kicks off Psalm 73 with a raw, honest confession. Asaph admits he was filled with envy, not just seeing the wicked succeed, but seeing them prosper.

What 'Prosperity' Meant

Not just money: The commentators highlight that 'prosperity' here often meant 'peace' – a sense of security, freedom from trouble, good health, and an apparent lack of suffering, even in death. It was the appearance of a life untouched by the difficulties that often afflict the faithful.
The Arrogant Kind: The original word translated 'foolish' here also carries a sense of arrogance and boasting. These weren't just people getting lucky; they were people flaunting their success, seemingly defying God's justice.

Asaph's faith was shaken because the outward reality he saw seemed to contradict the goodness and justice of God he believed in. This struggle is a powerful reminder that we too can face moments where life's circumstances tempt us to doubt God's character.

Envy: A Threat to Faith

Envy isn't just a fleeting emotion; for Asaph, it became a dangerous spiritual trap that nearly derailed his entire faith walk. What does this teach us about our own hearts?
