Jeremiah 12:1-3

Jeremiah begins by affirming God's righteousness, even as he feels compelled to debate the puzzling prosperity of the wicked. The Hebrew word translated "happy" here can also mean "secure" or "at ease," highlighting that the wicked aren't just lucky, but seem to be thriving and stable in their treacherous ways, which deeply troubles the prophet.
Righteous are you, O LORD, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive? You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit; you are near in their mouth and far from their heart. But you, O LORD, know me; you see me, and test my heart toward you. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeremiah is reeling from the realization that even his own community, the priests of Anathoth, have plotted against him. In this moment of personal betrayal, he brings his profound distress and confusion to God, acknowledging God's ultimate righteousness even as he questions why wicked people seem to thrive and find security. This lament sets the stage for a divine response that will reveal the coming judgment on both the wicked and the unfaithful nation.
Have you ever felt like you're wrestling with God over why bad things happen to good people, or why the wicked seem to get ahead? Jeremiah knew that feeling.
Jeremiah opens this passage with a profound act of faith: "Righteous are you, O LORD, when I complain to you." This isn't just a polite nod to God's character; it's a deliberate anchor. Jeremiah is troubled, deeply troubled, by the prosperity of the wicked. His heart is burning with questions. Yet, before he even voices his confusion, he affirms God's inherent justice.
