The text doesn't just say God rescued David; it emphasizes that God reached out to him, a deliberate action like a powerful hand pulling him from overwhelming danger. This image highlights that David wasn't just passively saved; he was actively seized and rescued from a situation so dire it was like drowning in "many waters"—representing immense trouble or even multitudes of enemies.
He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
English Standard Version (ESV)
David is describing a dramatic, divinely orchestrated rescue from overwhelming dangers. After depicting God's powerful, storm-like judgment against his enemies, he shifts to God's direct intervention to save him personally. This verse highlights that it was God Himself, reaching down from heaven, who pulled him out of peril, akin to being rescued from drowning in turbulent waters.
When David felt like he was drowning in trouble, who physically reached out to pull him to safety?
The verse paints a powerful picture of God's active intervention. It's not just an abstract idea; David emphasizes that God 'sent from on high' and 'took me.' This isn't a passive God watching from a distance. Imagine a hand, strong and sure, reaching down from heaven itself. This imagery highlights that our rescue doesn't come from our own efforts but from God's deliberate, powerful action, initiated by Him and directed specifically toward us in our moments of crisis.
What do these 'many waters' really represent when David writes about them?
The phrase 'many waters' is a vivid metaphor for overwhelming circumstances. It could refer to the sheer number of enemies pressing in on David, like a flood threatening to engulf him. It also speaks to the intensity of his distress and the feeling of being completely submerged by his problems. These aren't just a few raindrops; they are a deluge, a chaotic and dangerous situation where escape seems impossible. David uses this imagery to emphasize the severity of his predicament and the absolute necessity of divine intervention.
When God rescues us from the brink, what's the core reason behind His action?
While the verse vividly describes God's powerful rescue and the direness of the situation, the broader context of Psalms 18 points to the foundational reason: God's love and favor. David understood that his deliverance wasn't earned by his own merit or strength. It was because God delighted in him and had chosen him. This speaks volumes to us today. Our salvation and His ongoing help aren't based on our performance but on His steadfast love and sovereign good pleasure. He reaches down, pulls us out, and keeps us safe because He loves us.

(16) He drew me. —By an exquisite transition from the real to the figurative the poet conceives of these parted waters as the “floods of affliction” ( Psalm 18:5 ), from which Jehovah has rescued him by means of the very storm which was sent, in answer to his prayer, to overwhelm his enemies. Render at once more literally and forcibly, “He laid hold of me and drew me out of great waters.” The conception undoubtedly i…
clarkePsalms 18:16: "He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters."
He drew me out of many waters - Here the allusion is still carried on. The waters thus poured out were sweeping the people away; but God, by a miraculous interference, sent and drew David out. Sometimes waters are used to denote multitudes of people; and here the word may have that reference; multitudes were gathered together against David, but God delivered him from them all. This seems to be countenanced by the fol…
