Have you ever encountered someone who seemed unstoppable, a force of nature that threatened everything? This verse mentions King Sihon, a formidable ruler. But listen to how he's presented in this psalm...
Here's a bit of a head-scratcher at first glance! We read about Sihon, the king of the Amorites, immediately followed by the declaration, 'for his steadfast love endures forever.'
A Warrior King
Sihon was known as a powerful and aggressive king who refused to let the Israelites pass through his territory. In fact, he came out to fight them! (Numbers 21:23-24). He was a significant obstacle.
God's Mercy in Action
But the psalm isn't praising Sihon's power. Instead, it's highlighting how God's steadfast love – a deep, covenantal, enduring kindness – was demonstrated even through the defeat of kings like Sihon. God’s faithfulness to His people, even in the face of powerful opposition, is the true subject here. Sihon's reign was temporary; God's love is eternal. The psalm uses the memory of this victory to remind us of God's unending commitment to His people.
