The psalmist doesn't just call for praise; he commands his entire being to join in, from his deepest inner self to every part within him. This isn't just lip service, but a profound call for every faculty and affection to actively bless God's holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This psalm opens with a powerful, deeply personal summons from the psalmist, David, to his very being. He calls on his own soul—all his inner faculties, his thoughts, emotions, and affections—to actively praise and bless God's holy name. This isn't just a passive feeling, but a conscious, all-encompassing engagement of his entire self in expressing gratitude and adoration.
What does it really mean to 'bless' the Lord? It's more profound than just saying 'thanks!' It's an active, whole-hearted engagement.
The Hebrew word often translated as 'bless' in the Old Testament, especially when referring to God, isn't just about offering good wishes. It's a deep act of adoration, praise, and gratitude that involves the entire person. Think of it as an outpouring of a heart overflowing with thankfulness and recognition of God's goodness.
David isn't just giving God a pat on the back. He's calling his entire being – his thoughts, his emotions, his will – to actively engage in celebrating God's magnificent nature and His incredible acts. It’s a powerful command to his inner self to come alive in worship.
David's call to bless God with 'all that is within me' is a radical invitation to take stock of our inner world.
This isn't just about the big emotions; it's about everything inside. Our intellect, our will, our deepest affections, even our physical being – all are called to join the chorus of praise.
Consider it an inventory: What are your thoughts dwelling on? What are your desires longing for? What are your core beliefs shaping your actions? David commands all of these inner components to be redirected towards God's 'holy name.' It’s a call to integrate our faith into every part of our inner life, so that even our deepest self is consciously turned towards glorifying God.
