Philippians 3:7-10

What does Philippians 3:7-10 mean?

Paul doesn't just say his former achievements were worthless; he declares they became a loss. This subtle but powerful shift highlights how deeply these things had hindered him from truly embracing Christ, acting like dead weight on his spiritual journey.

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

What Philippians 3:7-10 means

Having just detailed his impeccable Jewish credentials—circumcised on the eighth day, an Israelite, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee, zealous for the law—Paul pivots to declare that all those earthly advantages were nothing compared to knowing Christ. He contrasts his former self-reliance on these external markers with his complete reliance on Jesus, framing his past privileges not just as worthless, but actively detrimental to his true spiritual gain in Christ.

Shifting the Definition of 'Gain'

What do you value most in life? Paul once thought his religious credentials were his greatest assets. Then, something shifted.

Before meeting Christ, Paul (then Saul) had a lot he considered 'gain.' Think about it: he was a Pharisee, zealous for the Law, from a respected heritage (Philippians 3:5-6). These weren't small things; they were the highest achievements in his cultural and religious world. He likely saw them as direct advantages for standing well with God and his community.

But the word 'gain' here (in the original Greek, 'kerdos') implies more than just assets. It suggests profit, something that brings advantage, especially in a transaction or a quest. Paul viewed his religious standing, his heritage, and his strict adherence to the Law as profitable investments for his spiritual life. He was 'rich' in his own eyes.

Loss: A Strategic Sacrifice for a Greater Prize

Paul didn't just stop valuing his old achievements; he actively reclassified them. What does it mean to count something as 'loss'?

The pivotal phrase here is 'I counted loss' (Greek, 'hegēmai zēmian'). The Greek word for 'loss' ('zēmian') originally referred to a loss incurred in trade, like goods thrown overboard in a storm to save the ship. It’s a deliberate, often costly, sacrifice.

Paul’s radical re-evaluation is astounding. His former 'gains' weren't just deemed neutral or insignificant; they were actively counted as detrimental—a hindrance—because of Christ. They had become obstacles to truly embracing Jesus. Relying on his own religious achievements kept him from recognizing his need for God's grace in Christ. He had to jettison those 'profitable' assets to make way for the infinitely greater treasure found in Christ.
