Obadiah 1:1-4

What does Obadiah 1:1-4 mean?

The phrase "We have heard a report from the LORD" isn't just the prophet relaying information; it implies a divine council or a collective hearing among prophets, signifying that this prophecy isn't a solitary revelation but part of a larger divine message being passed along. This collective "we" emphasizes the certainty and widespread nature of the divine decree against Edom, underscoring that this judgment is not a sudden whim but a well-established pronouncement.

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom: We have heard a report from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!” Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you shall be utterly despised. The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?” Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD.

What Obadiah 1:1-4 means

The prophet Obadiah delivers a divine message concerning Edom, revealing that a report has come from the Lord, and a messenger has been dispatched among the nations. This divine summons is a call to arms, urging the nations to rise up and wage war against Edom. The subsequent verses will detail Edom's pride and the reasons for this judgment.

A Divine Summons to Battle

The opening of Obadiah's prophecy sounds like a war cry. But who is speaking, and who is being called to arms?

The verse begins with "Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom." This immediately establishes that the message is from God and is directed at the nation of Edom.

What follows is a dramatic announcement:

"We have heard a report from the LORD." This isn't just gossip; it's a message directly from God, emphasizing its certainty and divine origin. The plural "we" likely refers to Obadiah and other prophets, or perhaps Obadiah speaking on behalf of himself and the people of God.
"and a messenger has been sent among the nations." God is actively mobilizing forces. This messenger could be an angel, a human leader like Nebuchadnezzar, or even the stirred-up passions of nations themselves, all acting as instruments of God's will.
'Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!' This is the rallying cry. It's a divine command that echoes through the nations, calling them to assemble and attack Edom. The urgency and decisiveness of this summons highlight the seriousness of God's judgment.

Edom: A Brother's Betrayal

The prophecy targets Edom, but why? What deep-seated issue is at play between them and Israel?

The prophecy concerning Edom is not arbitrary; it stems from a specific, painful history between Edom and Israel. Edom, descended from Esau, was the brother nation to Israel, descended from Jacob.
