The prophecy highlights Edom’s cruelty by emphasizing that they "cast off all pity." This wasn't just about a lack of compassion; the original Hebrew suggests they actively corrupted or destroyed their own natural affections, going against the very core of what it means to be human and, even more profoundly, what it means to be a brother. This deliberate silencing of their inner sense of kindness toward their kin is what truly sealed their doom.
Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Amos begins his prophecy by declaring God's judgment against surrounding nations, starting with Damascus and extending to Edom. The Edomites, descendants of Esau and therefore close kin to Israel (descended from Jacob), are condemned not for a single offense but for a pattern of brutal and unrelenting hostility towards their "brother" nation. This deep-seated hatred manifested in violence and a complete absence of mercy, a legacy passed down from their ancestor Esau.
God's judgment often hits hardest when close relationships are fractured. Edom and Israel were more than neighbors; they were family.
God establishes brotherhood not just by shared humanity but also through divine covenant and historical connection. The Edomites, descendants of Esau (Jacob's twin brother), shared a profound, God-given familial tie with the Israelites. The Law explicitly commanded Israel to treat Edom with respect, recognizing this kinship. Yet, Edom consistently chose hostility over humanity, pursuing Israel with violence and cruelty, a stark betrayal of their shared heritage and God's design for relational harmony.
Some anger is like a passing storm, but Edom’s wrath was a wildfire, intentionally stoked and never quenched.
The verse paints a disturbing picture of Edom's enduring malice. Their anger wasn't merely reactive; it was an active, cultivated state. 'Cast off all pity' speaks to a willful suppression of natural compassion, a deliberate hardening of the heart. This wasn't just a momentary lapse but a perpetual rage, an anger that 'tore perpetually' and was 'kept forever.' This implies a deliberate nurturing of resentment, a refusal to forgive or let go, turning a potentially destructive emotion into a defining characteristic that invited divine judgment.
