This passage highlights a crucial distinction: Aaron and his sons cover the holy things, signifying their priestly role in preparing them. Only after this sacred act of covering are the Kohathites permitted to carry them, but under a strict prohibition: they cannot touch the sacred items directly, only their coverings. This underscores that even within the service of God, there are defined roles and a profound reverence required for what belongs to Him, lest even proximity become perilous.
And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry these, but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things of the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage details the specific duties of the Kohathite family of Levites when the Israelites are on the move. After the priests, Aaron and his sons, have meticulously covered the sacred items of the Tabernacle with protective cloths, the Kohathites are then permitted to carry these holy objects, but only by the coverings, never touching the sacred vessels themselves, on pain of death. This strict rule highlights the immense holiness of God's presence and the danger of approaching it improperly, even for those assigned to its care.
Before anyone else can even approach the sacred items, a crucial step happens. Who is responsible for this, and why is it so important?
The passage highlights a distinct division of labor in the Tabernacle's transport. Aaron and his sons, the priests, have the immediate responsibility of covering the holy things and furnishings before the Kohathites carry them. This isn't just about packing; it's about a sacred ritual.
