Numbers 32:20-27

What does Numbers 32:20-27 mean?

Moses isn't just saying "go fight." He's emphasizing that their military service is to be done "before the LORD," a phrase that hints at marching alongside the Ark of the Covenant, the visible symbol of God's presence, or at least within God's sight and service. This elevates their participation from a mere duty to a sacred act, underscoring that their commitment to war is a commitment to God Himself.

So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.” And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders.”

What Numbers 32:20-27 means

The tribes of Reuben and Gad have just asked Moses if they can settle on the east side of the Jordan River, a fertile area they've scouted, rather than crossing into the Promised Land with the rest of Israel. Moses, initially quite stern, now outlines the conditions under which their request can be granted: they must send their fighting men across the Jordan to help conquer the land before returning to their families. This follows their proposal to build fortified cities for their families and flocks while their warriors fight alongside the rest of the tribes until the land is secured.

The War is the LORD's

These tribes are asking to settle on land east of the Jordan, away from the main conquest of Canaan. Moses has a condition for them, and it's framed in a very specific way.

Moses tells the Reubenites and Gadites, 'If you will go armed before the LORD to war...' (v. 20). What does 'before the LORD' mean here?

In God's Presence

Several commentators suggest it means to act sincerely and wholeheartedly, as if directly in God's sight. When we serve, it's not just for show, but for Him.

Marching with the Ark

Others point to the physical reality of the Israelite camp. The Ark of the Covenant, representing God's presence, was at the center. Certain tribes, including Reuben and Gad, marched before the Ark as part of the journey (Numbers 10:18-22). Even when crossing the Jordan, the Ark led the way (Joshua 4:13).

A Divine Mandate

So, 'before the LORD' could mean both acting with integrity and participating in the divine mission. Their service wasn't just a military campaign; it was an act of obedience and participation in God's plan for Israel.

A Covenant of Action

These tribes made a proposal to settle east of the Jordan, but Moses attaches strict conditions. His response isn't just a simple 'yes' or 'no.'
