Why did God choose the Levites? It's not just about lineage, but a divine exchange that reveals God's grace and the value He places on His people.
The census of the Levites in chapter 3 is deeply significant. They were chosen and counted 'instead of all the firstborn' among the Israelites (Numbers 3:12-13). When God struck down the firstborn in Egypt, He spared the firstborn of Israel, setting them apart for Himself.
However, God then chose the entire tribe of Levi to serve Him, 'instead of' all those firstborn. This wasn't a demotion for the Levites, but an incredible honor. It meant the entire tribe was dedicated to God's service, ensuring that His presence among His people would be continually ministered to. This act highlights God's intentionality in establishing a devoted service for Himself.
