It's easy to skim over this list as just names, but notice that Reuben is identified as "the firstborn of Israel." Even though this list is about to pivot to the lineage of Moses and Aaron (from Levi), it starts with the firstborn son. This placement subtly highlights God's sovereignty in choosing a lineage for His great work, not necessarily the one that seemed most prominent or even most honorable by human standards at that time.
These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the clans of Reuben. The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the clans of Simeon. These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, the years of the life of Levi being 137 years.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is about to remind Moses of His covenant promises, but first, He inserts a genealogy. This passage lists the heads of several patriarchal families, starting with Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, to establish the lineage from which Moses and Aaron—the deliverers of Israel—descended. The focus soon shifts specifically to the tribe of Levi, underscoring that their leaders were indeed Israelites, deeply connected to the people they were called to rescue.

These lists of names, like the one in Exodus 6:14, might seem dry or irrelevant at first glance. But ancient genealogies served crucial purposes:
God's plan often unfolds through ordinary families, carrying His promises from one generation to the next. How does this verse show that?
