Numbers 25:3-15

What does Numbers 25:3-15 mean?

The verse doesn't just say Israel worshiped Baal-Peor; it states they "yoked themselves" to it. This powerful phrase highlights not just a momentary lapse, but a deep, binding commitment, akin to being yoked to an animal, signifying a complete submission and allegiance shift away from God.

So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. And the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.” And Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor.” And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. And the LORD said to Moses, “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy. Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, and it shall be to him and to his descendants after him the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’” The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father’s house belonging to the Simeonites. And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the tribal head of a father’s house in Midian.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Numbers 25:3-15 means

The Israelites, while camped at Shittim, have begun to engage in sexual immorality with Moabite women, a sin that quickly escalates into idolatry as they participate in the worship of Baal of Peor. This defection from God ignites His fierce anger, setting the stage for a devastating plague that will sweep through the camp and the dramatic intervention of Phinehas to halt the judgment.

The Intimacy of 'Joining'

The word 'joined' here isn't just about being near; it speaks to a deep, even marital, connection. What does it mean for God's people to 'join' themselves to something other than Him?

The Hebrew word used for 'joined' (dabaq) signifies a powerful clinging, sticking, or cleaving. It's the same word used to describe the bond between a husband and wife (Genesis 2:24) or the loyalty a person should have to God. When Israel 'joined himself' to Baal of Peor, it was a profound act of spiritual infidelity.

A Forsaken Covenant

This wasn't a casual acquaintance; it was an intimate relationship. Israel, who was covenanted to Yahweh, broke faith and turned to another 'lord' (Baal). This allegiance meant abandoning their devotion to the One True God.

The Shameful Worship

Baal of Peor was associated with obscene rites and fertility worship, likely involving sexual immorality. To 'join' with him meant participating in these shameful practices, a direct contradiction to the purity God demanded.

The Fierce Anger of the Lord

The verse ends with a stark declaration: 'And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.' Why does idolatry provoke such a fierce response from God?

God's anger here isn't like human temper tantrums; it's a holy and righteous response to rebellion and desecration.

Jealousy for His Name

Idolatry is the ultimate affront to God's honor. He is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5), not out of insecurity, but out of a fierce love and protectiveness for His own glory and His people. To worship another god is to deny His unique deity and supremacy.
