What’s easily missed is that God’s initial finding of Israel was filled with such delight as a thirsty traveler discovering grapes in the desert. This wasn’t just about finding them, but about the sheer joy and preciousness they represented to Him at the start of their journey.
Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God reminds Israel of His initial, passionate love for them, comparing their early days to finding precious grapes in a barren desert and seeing their fathers as the first, most desirable fruit of a fig tree. However, this deep affection was quickly met with betrayal when they turned to worship Baal-peor, consecrating themselves to a shameful idol and becoming as detestable as the very thing they chose to love.
Imagine the most precious, unexpected treasure found in a barren desert. That's how God saw Israel at the beginning.
Hosea uses two powerful images to describe God's initial affection for Israel: 'grapes in the wilderness' and 'first fruit on the fig tree.'
What happens when a deep love is exchanged for something utterly shameful? Israel’s story takes a tragic turn.
The verse pivots sharply from God's affection to Israel's betrayal. The act of turning to Baal-peor wasn't just a mistake; it was a profound rejection.
