When things are peaceful, it's easy to think we're safe from temptation. But sometimes, comfort can become a breeding ground for sin.
Israel had endured years of hardship, wandering, and intense spiritual focus. Now, settled in Shittim, on the very brink of the Promised Land, they found a dangerous comfort. Instead of vigilance, they found laxity. This wasn't a time of war or intense suffering, but a season of ease. Notice how the text says they 'abode' there – a word suggesting settling in, becoming comfortable. It was in this relative peace that the people began to 'whore with the daughters of Moab.' This teaches us that spiritual danger doesn't only lurk in fiery trials; it can also creep in when life feels easy and settled.
