Numbers 22:22-31

What does Numbers 22:22-31 mean?

It's easy to overlook that God's anger is kindled after Balaam has been given permission to go. This isn't a contradiction, but a crucial detail: God’s allowance was a concession, not an endorsement, and He was angry because Balaam, blinded by greed, actively pursued a path that was contrary to God's will.

But God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the LORD took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand. And the donkey turned aside out of the road and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the road. Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side. And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pushed against the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So he struck her again. Then the angel of the LORD went ahead and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam. And Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff. Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you.” And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?” And he said, “No.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. And he bowed down and fell on his face.

What Numbers 22:22-31 means

Balaam, a prophet who can communicate with God, is being bribed by Balak, king of Moab, to curse the Israelites who are traveling through the region. God has already forbidden Balaam from going, but Balak sends even more distinguished princes with greater promises of riches, and God then allows Balaam to go, but only if he speaks exactly what God tells him. As Balaam sets out with the princes, God's anger flares because Balaam is willfully going against a divine prohibition and with a wicked intent, so an angel of the Lord stands in his path as an adversary.

God's Anger and Balaam's Journey

Balaam gets permission to go, so why is God angry? It seems like a sudden change of heart, but the text gives us clues.

God's anger wasn't just about Balaam going, but how and why he was going.

The Condition Unmet

God told Balaam, 'If the men come to call you, rise up and go with them' (Num. 22:20). While God did later say, 'Go with the men,' this permission was conditional and given in anger. Balaam didn't wait for them to 'call' him; he got up and saddled his donkey, showing eagerness to pursue the reward Balak offered. This eagerness to go, rather than a simple act of travel, is key.

The Heart's True Intent

Even with permission, God knew Balaam's heart was set on cursing Israel for personal gain. The biblical text often reveals that God’s anger is kindled not just by outward actions, but by the inward intent and rebellion against His will. Balaam's journey was motivated by greed, not obedience.

A Permission, Not an Endorsement

Think of God's permission like a parent letting a child 'do what you want' when they're upset. It doesn't mean the parent approves; it means they're stepping back, perhaps with disappointment, allowing the child to face the consequences of their choice. God allowed Balaam to go, but His anger shows He did not endorse the path Balaam was choosing.
