Who was Balaam, and why is his path presented as a model for those who've gone astray?
Peter doesn't just say they went astray; he identifies whose path they followed: 'the way of Balaam, the son of Beor.' This name would have sent chills down the spine of any follower of God.
Balaam's Deception
Balaam was a prophet, but his heart was corrupted. He was hired by King Balak of Moab to curse Israel (Numbers 22-24). Despite God's direct warnings, Balaam persisted in trying to find a way to curse God's people, motivated by the promise of reward.
Greed as the Root
The core of Balaam's sin, as stated in the verse, was that he 'loved gain from wrongdoing.' His desire for money and honor led him to actively seek ways to compromise God's people and, in doing so, oppose God Himself. This teaches us that greed can twist even a prophetic voice into a destructive force.
