Numbers 16:46-48

What does Numbers 16:46-48 mean?

What’s striking here is that Aaron is instructed to quickly offer incense to make atonement because a plague has begun. This isn't a formal, planned ritual, but an immediate, urgent action to intercept God's wrath, highlighting the tangible, swift consequence of sin and the desperate need for intercession. The act itself, offering incense where it wasn't normally offered outside the tabernacle, underscores the unprecedented crisis and the power of a mediator standing between the living and the dead.

And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun.” So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.

What Numbers 16:46-48 means

Following a devastating rebellion led by Korah against Moses and Aaron's authority, which resulted in the earth swallowing the rebels and fire consuming others, the people then murmured against Moses and Aaron for killing God's people. In response to this new wave of rebellion and as divine wrath manifested as a plague, Moses urgently instructs Aaron to use his censer and incense as a means of atonement to stop the deadly affliction.

The Censer as a Symbol of Intercession

In a moment of crisis, Aaron is sent with a censer. What does this simple act symbolize for us today?

In this dire moment, Moses instructs Aaron to take a censer, put fire on it from the altar, and lay incense upon it. This wasn't just a ritual; it was a powerful symbol.

A Symbol of Prayer and Mediation

The burning incense in the censer represented the prayers of God's people ascending to Him. It was an emblem of intercession, a plea for mercy in the face of judgment.

A Glimpse of Christ's Work

This act foreshadows the ultimate intercessory work of Jesus Christ. Just as Aaron's incense stood between the living and the dead, Jesus stands between us and God's wrath, making atonement for our sins.

Divine Wrath and Its Swift Response

When judgment falls, it's not a slow creep but a terrifying reality. How should we respond to God's unleashed wrath?

The urgency in Moses' command – 'go quickly!' – highlights the immediacy of God's judgment. The text states, 'for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun.'

Wrath Unleashed

This isn't a distant threat; it's an active, destructive force. God's wrath is a righteous response to sin and rebellion, and when it is expressed, it is powerful and swift.
