The verse highlights that Nadab and Abihu didn't just offer unauthorized fire, but a fire that God "had not commanded them." This subtle phrasing points to their sin not just as a mistake, but as a direct act of doing something outside of God's prescribed will, emphasizing that even in worship, initiative apart from divine instruction is perilous.
Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Just after the tabernacle's services were inaugurated and God's glory filled the place, two of Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, took matters into their own hands. They presumptuously offered incense to God using unauthorized fire, not the sacred fire from the altar that God had commanded, and in a way that was not prescribed. This act, performed before the Lord, immediately led to a swift and devastating divine judgment described in the following verses.
Did you know that God is really specific about how we're supposed to approach Him? Leviticus 10:1 shows us that 'strange fire'—fire God didn't command—had devastating consequences.
The Heart of the Matter: God's Instructions
This verse highlights a critical principle: God desires worship that is offered according to His explicit commands. Nadab and Abihu didn't just do something wrong; they did something God had not commanded.
