Numbers 14:39-43

What does Numbers 14:39-43 mean?

The Israelites' "mourning" here wasn't a turning away from sin itself, but a deep, worldly regret for the consequences – the loss of the promised land and the immediate danger. Their sorrow wasn't about offending God, but about suffering punishment, highlighting the difference between true repentance and simply being unhappy about getting caught.

When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned.” But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed? Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.”

What Numbers 14:39-43 means

After God declared that the entire generation who left Egypt would die in the wilderness because of their fear and rebellion, Moses relayed this grim sentence to the people. In response to hearing their fate – a forty-year sentence of wandering and exclusion from the promised land – the Israelites were overcome with grief. This sorrowful reaction, however, wasn't necessarily for their sin itself, but for the severe consequences they now faced.

Mourning: For Sin or for Loss?

The people of Israel heard the devastating news: God's promise of a land was now out of reach. They began to mourn, but what was the true source of their grief?

In Numbers 14, after the people rebelled by refusing to enter the Promised Land, Moses relays God's judgment: they would wander in the wilderness for 40 years, and none of the generation that complained would see the land.

This news brought great sorrow. But the commentators highlight a crucial distinction: this was not necessarily a 'godly sorrow' that leads to repentance and healing. Instead, it was more like a 'worldly sorrow'—grief over the consequences of sin, not over the sin itself.

Think about it: their focus was on what they would lose (the land, their future) rather than on how they had offended God.

Worldly Sorrow: Focuses on punishment, regret over getting caught, and personal loss.
Godly Sorrow: Focuses on the offense against God, a desire for His forgiveness, and a change of heart.

Too Late for Tears

After hearing their sentence, the people's mourning was immediate. But was it effective? And what does that tell us about the timing of repentance?

The immediate aftermath of hearing God’s judgment was mourning. However, the biblical narrative, particularly through the insights of commentators like Wesley and Gill, emphasizes that this mourning came the point of no return.
