Nehemiah 4:7-10

What does Nehemiah 4:7-10 mean?

The Hebrew word used here carries a beautiful metaphor: "the repairing of the walls" is described as "the healing going up upon the walls." This isn't just about rebuilding stone; it’s about mending what was broken and wounded, bringing restoration and wholeness back to the city.

But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry. And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night. In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.”

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Nehemiah 4:7-10 means

Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem are making remarkable progress in rebuilding the city walls, closing up the breaches that had left them vulnerable for years. This good news enrages their enemies, a coalition led by Sanballat and Tobiah, who represent various surrounding groups including Arabs, Ammonites, and people from Ashdod. Seeing their efforts to undermine the project fail, these foes unite in anger, plotting to stop the work through force.

A Coalition of Envy

Why did so many different groups unite against Jerusalem's rebuilding? It wasn't just about a wall.

This verse lists a surprising coalition: Sanballat (likely a Samaritan official), Tobiah (an Ammonite official), Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites (Philistines).

Motives Behind the Malice

Regional Power Struggle: Jerusalem, a strategically important city, had been in ruins. Its rebuilding threatened the established powers in the region, like the Samaritans and Philistines who had long-standing rivalries with Judah.
Economic Threat: The flourishing of Jerusalem meant potential loss of trade routes and influence for its neighbors. The Philistine city of Ashdod, in particular, controlled key routes into Egypt and likely resented Jerusalem's resurgence.
Envy of God's People: Beyond politics and economics, there was a deep-seated animosity towards God's chosen people and their renewed devotion. Their enemies hated to see God's people prosper and their city restored.

The Wall's 'Healing' Provokes Rage

The Hebrew word for repairing the wall paints a vivid picture. What did it signify to the enemies?

The text uses a powerful metaphor: 'the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches began to be stopped.' The original language uses a term that literally means 'healing' or 'making whole.'
