Ezra 4:1-5

What does Ezra 4:1-5 mean?

This verse highlights the immediate reaction of those who opposed God's people, not just to the act of building, but specifically to the fact that the returning exiles were dedicating this temple to the LORD, the God of Israel. Their opposition wasn't merely political; it was a direct challenge to the exclusive worship of the true God.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ houses and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.” But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.” Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build and bribed counselors against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

What Ezra 4:1-5 means

The exiles have finally returned from Babylon and are beginning the monumental task of rebuilding the temple to God in Jerusalem. As news spreads of this sacred endeavor, those living in the land who are not part of the returned Jewish community—a mixed population known as adversaries or Samaritans—hear about the construction. This marks the beginning of a long and persistent opposition that will seek to thwart the rebuilding efforts.

The Enemy's Name is Deception

The moment God's people start rebuilding, you can bet the enemy takes notice. But the enemy isn't always obvious. Sometimes, they even wear a mask of friendship.

Right from the start, Ezra 4:1 introduces the 'adversaries.' Who are they? The commentaries make it clear: they are primarily the Samaritans. These weren't outsiders; they were a mixed group, descendants of the people left behind when the northern tribes were exiled, mixed with foreign populations brought in by the Assyrians. They even claimed to worship the LORD, but it was a twisted, syncretic faith, a blend of their own gods and Israel's God. They represent a spiritual enemy that often looks like it belongs, but its heart is far from God's true purposes. They are described as 'adversaries' or 'persecutors' because their ultimate goal is to thwart God's work, even if they start by appearing helpful.

Rebuilding God's House Attracts Fire

There's something about a renewed commitment to God that the enemy just can't stand. When God's people start to rebuild, especially His house, expect resistance.

This verse marks a pivotal moment. The exiles, after years of devastation and longing, are finally beginning to rebuild the Temple to the LORD, the God of Israel. This act of faith and obedience was not unnoticed. The 'adversaries' immediately 'heard' about it. This isn't just about bricks and mortar; it's about the re-establishment of worship, a visible sign of God's presence and favor returning to His people. The enemy's attention is drawn precisely because this building project represents hope, restoration, and a direct challenge to their own spiritual influence in the land. Anytime God's people commit to a work that honors Him, it has the potential to stir up opposition.
