The prophet uses a clever wordplay, urging them "not to tell it in Gath" and "not to weep at all" in the Philistine city, but instead to "roll yourselves in the dust" in "Beth-le-aphrah." This play on "aphrah" (dust) and "Beth-le-aphrah" (house of dust) highlights that their true and private sorrow should be found in their own devastated homeland, not among their mocking enemies.
Tell it not in Gath; weep not at all; in Beth-le-aphrah roll yourselves in the dust. Pass on your way, inhabitants of Shaphir, in nakedness and shame; the inhabitants of Zaanan do not come out; the lamentation of Beth-ezel shall take away from you its standing place. For the inhabitants of Maroth wait anxiously for good, because disaster has come down from the LORD to the gate of Jerusalem.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Micah begins a somber lamentation over the impending judgment against Judah and its cities, likening the devastation to an invading army. He uses wordplay with place names to emphasize the sorrow and destruction, urging his people to mourn in their own land rather than allowing their enemies to gloat. The prophet’s words echo David's grief, highlighting the deep shame and humiliation that comes when God's people fall into ruin and become a spectacle to the ungodly.
Why would the prophet tell people not to weep? Wouldn't sorrow be the natural response to disaster?
Micah is calling for a specific kind of mourning, one that doesn't advertise the nation's pain to its enemies.

barnesMicah 1:10: "Declare ye it not at Gath, weep ye not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll thyself in the dust."
Tell it not in Gath - Gath had probably now ceased to be; at least, to be of any account . It shows how David's elegy lived in the hearts of Judah, that his words are used as a proverb, (just as we do now, in whose ears it is yearly read), when, as with us, its original application was probably lost. True, Gath, reduced itself, might rejoice the more maliciously over the sufferings of J…
