Jesus flips our understanding of 'blessed' on its head. He says the suffering you might dread is actually a sign of God's favor.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives a series of 'blessed are you' statements. We often think of blessings as comfort, ease, and good fortune. But Jesus expands this vision.
A Different Kind of Blessed
He tells us we're blessed when we're reviled, persecuted, and slandered. This isn't about wishing hardship on anyone, but about recognizing that when these things happen falsely and for His sake, they point to something deeper.
- Reviled: This means being insulted, spoken against with contempt, and subjected to public scorn. Think of harsh words, mocking, and demeaning labels.
- Persecuted: This goes beyond words, involving active harm, oppression, and being chased out or attacked.
- Evil Spoken Falsely: This highlights slander and malicious lies spread with the intent to ruin reputation and character.
Notice that the key is that this suffering is false and for Jesus' sake. It's not about deserving bad treatment. It's about being associated with Christ and His righteousness.
