Peter tells believers not to be 'surprised' by fiery trials. Why should suffering be an expected part of the Christian life?
The Normality of Persecution
Peter's audience, scattered throughout Asia Minor, was facing intense pressure and likely persecution for their faith. He's telling them that experiencing hardship because you follow Christ isn't a sign that you've done something wrong or that God has abandoned you. In fact, it's the opposite – it’s a sign you are truly aligned with Christ, who Himself suffered greatly. The early church understood that following Jesus meant potential opposition from the world. So, don't be shocked when the world reacts negatively to your commitment to Christ; it's what the Master Himself experienced.
