Why would religious leaders, who actively sought to discredit Jesus, start by praising Him? This isn't genuine admiration; it's a calculated move.
These adversaries, the Pharisees and Herodians, were not interested in Jesus's character for its own sake. Their words, "Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion," were a sophisticated trap.
- A Calculated Compliment: They knew Jesus was known for His integrity and fearlessness. By acknowledging this, they aimed to lower His guard and make Him more receptive to their question. It was a way to disarm Him before springing their trap.
- The Goal: Their ultimate aim was not to learn, but to 'entangle him' (Matthew 22:15) and find something to use against Him, either by making Him appear disloyal to Rome or disloyal to Jewish law and custom.
