The unclean spirit seeks "dry places," which in ancient thought weren't just empty deserts but represented spiritual desolation and places where God's presence was absent. This highlights that the spirit isn't truly finding relief, but desperately wandering through barrenness, mirroring the emptiness of a life without God's true rest.
“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus tells this parable to illustrate the spiritual state of his generation, who, despite having experienced God's power in expelling evil, are refusing to fully embrace Him. This follows a confrontation where the Pharisees demanded a sign, and Jesus lamented their persistent unbelief, leading into the warning that a merely cleansed state without Christ invites something worse. The parable describes an unclean spirit finding no rest in desolate places after being expelled, then returning to a swept and garnished house with even more wicked spirits.
Why would an evil spirit seek out
Jesus uses vivid imagery here. When an unclean spirit leaves a person, it doesn't just disappear. It wanders through "dry places" – desolate, barren, and uninhabited areas.
An empty house can be more dangerous than a full one. What does this mean for our spiritual lives?
The core of this passage is the danger of simply removing evil without replacing it with good.

When the unclean spirit - If there had been no reality in demoniacal possessions, our Lord would have scarcely appealed to a case of this kind here, to point out the real state of the Jewish people, and the desolation which was coming upon them.
