Isaiah 34:11-15

What does Isaiah 34:11-15 mean?

The imagery of the "line of confusion" and "plumb line of emptiness" isn't just about destruction, but about God using the tools of a builder to scientifically and completely dismantle Edom, returning it to the state of primal chaos, tohu va'vohu. This implies a divine order even in utter desolation, God's meticulous plan for its undoing.

But the hawk and the porcupine shall possess it, the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. He shall stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness. Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom, and all its princes shall be nothing. Thorns shall grow over its strongholds, nettles and thistles in its fortresses. It shall be the haunt of jackals, an abode for ostriches. And wild animals shall meet with hyenas; the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; indeed, there the night bird settles and finds for herself a resting place. There the owl nests and lays and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow; indeed, there the hawks are gathered, each one with her mate.

What Isaiah 34:11-15 means

The prophet Isaiah is describing the utter devastation and desolation that will come upon the land of Edom as a judgment from God. This judgment is described using imagery similar to prophecies against other nations, portraying the land becoming a habitat for wild, unclean creatures and returning to a state of primal chaos. The text sets up this scene of ruin following God's pronouncements against Edom in the preceding verses.

Birds of Desolation

Imagine a place so empty, so utterly abandoned, that only the strangest, loneliest creatures dare to live there. This verse paints that exact picture.

The Uninhabited Land

Isaiah uses specific, often unpleasant creatures to describe the utter ruin of Edom. The 'cormorant' (often translated as pelican) and the 'bittern' (perhaps a porcupine or hedgehog) are paired with the 'owl' and the 'raven.'

These aren't cozy forest animals; they're creatures associated with desolate, wild, and even unclean places. Their presence signifies a land stripped of human life and habitation, becoming a haunting monument to judgment.

The Architect of Emptiness

God isn't just allowing destruction; He's measuring it out with terrifying precision. This verse uses building tools for the work of demolition.

Measuring for Destruction

The phrases 'line of confusion' and 'plumb line of emptiness' are powerful metaphors. Normally, builders use a line and a plumb bob (the 'stones' or 'plummet') to ensure walls are straight and structures are sound.

But here, these same tools are employed for the opposite purpose: to mark out a land for complete demolition. It's God's judgment being laid out with exactness, ensuring every part of Edom will be reduced to chaos and void, like the unformed earth before creation.
