The priests are essentially saying, "What's the big deal? It's just food on a table, God won't even notice or care if it's less than perfect." They've reduced God's sacred worship to a casual meal, revealing a deep disrespect for Him and His commands, even if they don't admit it aloud.
By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the LORD’s table may be despised. When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God's people, particularly the priests, are being directly accused of despising His name and His worship. The prophet Malachi challenges them, asking how they have failed in their reverence, and the divine answer is that they've been offering defective and "polluted" sacrifices, essentially treating God's altar as insignificant. This action is presented as the direct consequence of their underlying attitude that the "table of the Lord is contemptible."
Have you ever given something that was damaged or less than your best and called it an offering? What does that say about your heart?
In Malachi 1:7, God confronts the priests for offering 'polluted bread' on His altar. This wasn't just about bad food; it was about a fundamental disrespect for God Himself.
What Was 'Polluted Bread'?
The Heart of the Matter
God's question, 'Wherein have we polluted You?' is met with the devastating answer: 'By saying that the LORD’s table may be despised.' Their actions—offering subpar sacrifices—were a direct expression of their belief that God’s table (the altar) was worth despising. It was a spiritual laziness and disrespect that communicated, 'God doesn't really matter that much.'
Do your actions speak louder than your words about what you truly value?
The priests in Malachi try to justify their actions, asking, 'How have we polluted You?' They might not have outright said, 'God's table is contemptible,' but their screamed it.
