Why did Jesus, who had no sin, need to be baptized like everyone else? Luke gives us a subtle clue.
While the other Gospels describe the crowd's baptism, Luke specifically notes that Jesus's baptism happened after everyone else had finished. This phrasing suggests His baptism wasn't just another ritual in the Jordan River.
A Baptism of Fulfilment
Jesus Himself explained to John the Baptist that He had to be baptized to 'fulfill all righteousness' (Matthew 3:15). This wasn't about cleansing from sin, as Jesus had none. Instead, it was about Him aligning Himself with God's will and the people of God, setting an example for His ministry.
Set Apart from the Crowd
Luke's wording, 'Now when all the people were baptized... Jesus also being baptized,' subtly separates Jesus's act from the masses. While immersed in the same waters, His purpose and divine significance were distinct, marking Him as uniquely set apart from sinners.
