Why would the sinless Son of God need baptism, a rite for repentance?
Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist is a pivotal moment. John's baptism was a baptism of repentance, signifying a turning away from sin. Jesus, having no sin, didn't need this for Himself. Yet, He submitted. When John questioned Him, Jesus replied, 'Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.' This means Jesus was aligning Himself with God's plan, obeying every divine requirement. He wasn't just cleansing Himself; He was, in a profound way, identifying with humanity and initiating His public ministry by fulfilling God's will completely. It was an act of perfect obedience and solidarity with the people He came to save.
