This isn't just about avoiding touching a dead body; it's about the priest's entire public persona being set apart. Even the common, natural act of mourning for "his people" is restricted, teaching that their consecrated lives are meant to constantly mirror God's holiness, distinct from the impurity associated with death.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, No one shall make himself unclean for the dead among his people, except for his closest relatives, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother, or his virgin sister (who is near to him because she has had no husband; for her he may make himself unclean). He shall not make himself unclean as a husband among his people and so profane himself.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following laws about general holiness, God now outlines special requirements for priests, specifically Aaron's sons, to maintain their sacred role. This passage begins by restricting them from defiling themselves through contact with the dead, emphasizing their unique calling to serve God and thus remain ritually pure. The subsequent verses will detail specific exceptions and further restrictions related to their family and marital lives.

The LORD instructs Moses to tell the priests, sons of Aaron, that they must not 'defile themselves for the dead.' This isn't just about avoiding physical contact with a corpse. It's a deeper call to ceremonial purity.
The Priest's Role:
The call to holiness for priests involves setting God's service above even the deepest human relationships. How did this play out in practice?

While the priests were forbidden from defiling themselves for most deaths, the law made specific exceptions for their closest family members: father, mother, son, daughter, brother, and unmarried sister. However, even in these cases, there were boundaries.
