This passage reveals that the fruit is considered "uncircumcised," a term used metaphorically to signify something set apart as unfit or unclean for use, much like the early stages of a tree's life are not yet ready for harvest. This law wasn't just about waiting for ripe fruit; it was a deliberate practice to foster stronger, more productive trees and to teach self-control by deferring gratification.
“When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, then you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. And in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, an offering of praise to the LORD. But in the fifth year you may eat of its fruit, to increase its yield for you: I am the LORD your God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This law, given prospectively for when the Israelites enter the Promised Land, addresses the fruit of newly planted trees. Before this, in the preceding verses, laws dealt with other aspects of holy living, like how to handle certain crimes and the importance of justice. This command about fruit trees continues the theme of ordered living, with the next verses explaining how the fruit of the fourth year is to be consecrated to God.
Why would God compare fruit to something that sounds so… unclean? This law reveals a deeper principle than just hygiene.
The law here calls the fruit of a newly planted tree 'uncircumcised' for the first three years. This wasn't about the fruit being literally impure, but rather unfit for sacred use or consumption, similar to how the foreskin marked someone as not fully part of God's covenant people.
This isn't just about a strange rule; it's about smart, God-given wisdom for abundance.
God's commands often have practical, beneficial outcomes. This law about young fruit trees is a prime example:

This law wasn't for Day 1 in the wilderness. It was a glimpse of life in the Promised Land.
Notice that this law begins with 'When you come into the land...' This tells us it’s a prospective law, given in advance for a future reality. God wasn’t just giving rules for the desert journey; He was shaping their understanding of how to live in the land He was giving them.

Leviticus 23:10This verse speaks of bringing the firstfruits of the harvest into the land, which directly relates to the principle behind Leviticus 19:23 that the earliest produce was to be consecrated before being used.

1 Corinthians 15:23This passage discusses the 'firstfruits' in a spiritual sense, with Christ as the firstfruits of the resurrection, linking the agricultural concept of firstfruits to a deeper theological reality of sacred beginnings and holy order.
