Deuteronomy 20:19

This passage reveals a surprising tenderness towards the natural world, especially fruit trees, during warfare. It's not just about practicality – allowing soldiers to eat the fruit – but about recognizing that these trees sustain life, and their destruction needlessly exacerbates the harshness of war. The question, "Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you?" emphasizes their innocence and vulnerability, urging a deeper consideration for life beyond the immediate conflict.
“When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them. You may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you?
English Standard Version (ESV)
As Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land and engage in warfare, these commands outline specific ethical guidelines for battle. This passage immediately follows instructions on how to approach warfare, including exemptions for those recently married or building a home. It then pivots to a surprising decree about sparing fruit trees during a siege, revealing a concern for sustainability and future provisions even amidst conflict.
Imagine laying siege to a city, determined to win. What would you do with the resources around you? God has a surprising command here, one that reveals His heart.
In the midst of a brutal, prolonged siege, Israel was forbidden to cut down fruit trees. This wasn't about sentimentality; it was about preserving life.
A Policy of Preservation
This demonstrates that even in warfare, God's law incorporates principles of sustainability and care for life-giving resources.
The rationale behind sparing the trees is profound and almost poetic. What does it reveal about God's view of life, even in nature?
The verse poses a rhetorical question that cuts to the heart of the matter: 'Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you?'

This emphasizes that even in war, there is a distinction between combatants and resources, and a recognition that life-sustaining elements of creation deserve protection.
This passage highlights God's incredible care for even the smallest details of creation, like wildflowers, which makes the command to protect fruit-bearing trees during warfare even more profound. If God clothes the grass so beautifully, how much more will He ensure His people (and their sustenance) are cared for.
Matthew 7:16Jesus uses the analogy of fruit to discern the true nature of something (or someone). This connects to Deuteronomy's emphasis on the fruit of trees as a vital source of life and sustenance, a principle that extends to judging character by the 'fruit' produced.
Romans 11:17-18Paul uses the metaphor of an olive tree, where the Gentile believers are grafted in among the Jewish branches, to explain God's work in His people. This illustrates how humanity is sustained and nourished by what is rooted in God's provision, much like the Israelites were meant to rely on the fruit trees.
Genesis 1:29God's initial provision for humanity was a diet of plants and fruits. This foundational command in Deuteronomy echoes that original provision, reminding us that our sustenance is meant to come from the bounty of the earth, not through its destruction.
