Israel was called to be different. Why was such a strict code of conduct necessary, and what does it reveal about God's character?
The core of this command is God's desire for His people to reflect His own holiness.
A Covenant People
As God's chosen people, Israel had a unique relationship with Him. They were not to imitate the surrounding nations who lived without God's clear moral guidance. Being 'clean' meant living according to God's standards, which were designed to protect them and set them apart.
The 'Why' Behind the Rules
These laws addressed behaviors that disrupted the fabric of families and society, and that were detestable to a holy God. The consequence for the nations was expulsion; for Israel, the warning was to avoid becoming 'unclean' lest they face a similar fate. This emphasized that their relationship with God was conditional on their obedience and purity.
