Leviticus 16:16

What’s easily missed here is that the very presence of God’s dwelling place among His people meant that even this holy sanctuary became “unclean” because of their sins. It wasn't that the tabernacle itself was inherently sinful, but that proximity to a sinful people, and the sins they committed, defiled the sacred space from God's perspective, requiring a cleansing atonement.
Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The high priest is performing the most sacred ritual of the year, the Day of Atonement, to cleanse the entire sanctuary. He has already entered the Most Holy Place with blood to atone for it, and now he extends this cleansing to the Tent of Meeting itself. This entire process is necessary because even the sacred dwelling place of God becomes tainted by the pervasive uncleanness and sins of the people of Israel who live around it.
The holiest place on Earth, God's own dwelling, needed atonement. How could a holy place be affected by sin?
Even the sacred spaces of the Tabernacle, including the Most Holy Place and the Tent of Meeting, were considered defiled because they were situated among the Israelites and, in a sense, 'touched' by their uncleanness and transgressions. This highlights a profound theological point: God's holiness is absolute, but His presence among a sinful people meant that His dwelling place on Earth was symbolically tainted by their ongoing sinfulness.
We often think of atonement for sins committed by people. But this verse reveals it was also for the 'holy place' itself!
The Day of Atonement wasn't solely about cleansing the people's sin; it was also about re-establishing God's dwelling place as fit for His presence. The blood sprinkled wasn't just a symbol for human guilt, but a means to purify the sacred structures that housed God's presence.

This passage directly connects the Old Testament tabernacle's purification rituals, like the one in Leviticus 16, to the heavenly realities Christ fulfills through His sacrifice. It highlights that the earthly 'patterns' needed cleansing because of sin, pointing to a greater, heavenly cleansing.
Ezekiel 23:38-39This prophetic passage speaks to God's lament over His sanctuary being defiled by Israel's actions, mirroring the concept in Leviticus 16 that the presence of sin among God's people pollutes even the sacred space where He dwells. It emphasizes how sin impacts God's dwelling place.
1 Peter 2:4-5Peter calls believers 'living stones' built into a spiritual house, emphasizing that they, like the Tabernacle in Leviticus, are God's dwelling place. This passage draws a parallel to how our lives, though imperfect, are meant to be a holy dwelling for God, requiring inner cleansing.
John 1:14This verse speaks of Jesus, the Word, 'dwelling among us' and being full of grace and truth. It echoes the idea of God's presence, like the Tabernacle, dwelling in the midst of humanity, yet Jesus, unlike the Tabernacle, brings perfect purity and truth.
