The laws in Leviticus have been about animals and food, things we touch and eat. But now, the focus shifts to something much closer to home. What changed?
Up until this point in Leviticus, the uncleanness laws primarily dealt with external sources: touching dead bodies, eating unclean animals, or coming into contact with diseases on skin or buildings. These were things 'outside' of us.
Chapter 12 marks a significant turn. The LORD begins to speak about uncleanness that arises 'from ourselves' – specifically, the natural processes of childbirth. This isn't about a moral failing, but a ceremonial state that requires purification. It shows God's deep care for even the most intimate aspects of human life and His desire to set His people apart.
