The command to "subdue" the earth and "have dominion" isn't about exploitation, but about responsible stewardship and management, reflecting God's own order and care for His creation. This implies a task given to humanity to work with the created order, not against it, using their God-given abilities to manage and care for it.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse marks the climax of God's creation, coming immediately after the creation of humanity in God's image. It serves as the foundational directive for mankind, outlining their purpose and relationship with the created world before the fall into sin. The command to "be fruitful and multiply" is God's initial blessing and commission to humanity, shaping the future of the entire human race.
God’s first words to humanity weren’t just about having kids. They were a strategic blueprint for how we engage with His creation.
In Genesis 1:28, God gives humanity two primary commands, often called the 'cultural mandate' or 'creation mandate':
Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth: This is about life and increase. It's God's intention for humanity to expand, to populate the earth, and to bring forth generations. This isn’t merely a biological command; it speaks to the vibrant, life-giving purpose God instilled in humanity.
Subdue it, and have dominion over... every living thing: This is about stewardship and authority. 'Subdue' doesn't mean to destroy or exploit, but to bring under control, to manage, and to utilize responsibly. 'Dominion' signifies a delegated authority, a role as caretakers under God's ultimate sovereignty. We are called to rule not as tyrants, but as wise stewards, reflecting God's own care for His creation.
Why are humans uniquely equipped to rule? It's because we're made to reflect the ultimate Ruler.
The command to 'subdue' and 'have dominion' isn't arbitrary; it's intrinsically linked to humanity being created 'in the image of God' (Genesis 1:26-27).

Reflecting God's Character: To be made in God's image means we possess capacities that reflect His nature – reason, morality, creativity, and the ability to relate. Our dominion is meant to mirror God's own perfect governance: just, wise, and life-affirming.
Stewardship, Not Exploitation: Because God is a benevolent Creator, our rule over creation should also be benevolent. The commentators highlight that 'subdue' and 'dominion' don't imply ruthless exploitation, but responsible stewardship. We are His vicegerents, tasked with managing His creation according to His purposes, not our selfish desires.
The Goal of Restoration: While the Fall (Genesis 3) marred this image, the New Testament speaks of believers being renewed in this image through Christ (Colossians 3:10). This implies that true dominion and stewardship are ultimately restored and fulfilled in Christ, and we participate in that restoration.
