It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him; let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope; let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, and let him be filled with insults.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The prophet Jeremiah is lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of his people, reflecting on the overwhelming sorrow and the seeming abandonment by God. Amidst this deep despair, he asserts that bearing hardship, whether the discipline of God's law or the painful experiences of life, is ultimately beneficial, especially when endured in one's youth. Prophecies of Lamentations
The Book of Lamentations is traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, reflecting on the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile, expressing deep sorrow and a plea for repentance.
This Psalm directly echoes the sentiment, stating 'It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.' It shows that suffering, particularly in youth, serves as a valuable teacher for God's ways.

Good here must be expounded in the same sense as in the foregoing verse. It is not pleasant, but it is profitable, it is honourable, what becomes us, and is our duty, quietly and patiently to bear what afflictions God will please to lay upon us, to restrain our wild and wanton spirits when they are most prone to be too brisk and lascivious. Some by yoke understand the law of God, called a yoke, ( because indeed it is…

Verse 27. - In his youth. The thought of this verse reminds us of Psalm 119:71. Youth is mentioned as the time when it is easier to adapt one's self to circumstances, and when discipline is most readily accepted. The words do not prove that the writer is young, any more than vers. 9 and 100 of Psalm 119. prove that the psalmist was an aged man (against this view, see vers. 84-87). There is no occasion, therefore, for…
