What's striking is that Gideon overhears a Midianite soldier describing a dream about a simple barley cake knocking over a tent. This humble "cake of barley bread," representing the common Israelite people, was seen as a symbol of their lowliness by their oppressors, yet in the dream, it causes utter destruction to the mighty Midianite camp. This shows how God uses the seemingly insignificant and despised to bring about His powerful victories.
When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Gideon, having been encouraged by God to spy on the enemy camp, overhears a Midianite soldier recounting a dream. The dream features a simple cake of barley bread tumbling into their camp and demolishing a tent, which the soldier interprets as a sign that God has delivered the Midianites into Gideon's hand. This dream, symbolizing Gideon's humble origins and the unexpected power God wields, significantly boosts Gideon's confidence before leading his drastically outnumbered army.
Why would a 'cake of barley bread' strike fear into a mighty army? This humble food held a deeper meaning for Gideon's enemies.
The dream featured a simple cake of barley bread. This wasn't just any bread; it was the coarse food of the poor and common folk. For the Midianites, who had been oppressing Israel and likely looked down on them, this barley bread symbolized the very people they despised – the Israelites. By picturing this humble food toppling their tents, the dream powerfully spoke of how the seemingly weak and insignificant Israelites, under God's hand, would utterly defeat the mighty Midianite army.
Dreams can feel so random, but what if God actually speaks through them? This story shows God working even within the understanding of non-believers.
Gideon wasn't just eavesdropping; he was sent by God to hear this specific dream and its interpretation. While the soldier sharing the dream likely didn't fully grasp God's plan, God sovereignly used his dream and his interpretation to encourage Gideon. The soldier’s own words reveal a startling insight: 'Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian... Into my hand hath God delivered Midian.' This shows that God can work through anyone, even those outside of Israel, to confirm His promises and reveal His power.
The dream's climax is vivid: a tent falling and turning upside down. What does this dramatic image signify for Gideon's mission?

The dream describes a barley cake not just touching, but striking, falling, and overturning a tent. The language used emphasizes a complete and utter destruction. Commentators suggest this tent could represent the main command tent of the Midianite army. The overturning signifies not just defeat, but a total rout – their entire camp thrown into chaos and their leadership incapacitated. This wasn't a partial victory; it was a complete overthrow, a powerful symbol of the overwhelming victory God promised Gideon, despite his small force.
