The verse highlights that God's communication isn't always loud or dramatic; He often speaks through subtle ways like dreams, conscience, or quiet providences. The crucial point is that even when God speaks "once, yea twice," humans often miss it because they're not attuned to these gentler, more ordinary methods of divine guidance.
For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings,
English Standard Version (ESV)
Elihu is explaining that God communicates with humanity in various ways, often through dreams or inner promptings, not always through dramatic signs. Job has been demanding a direct audience with God, but Elihu argues that God has been speaking, even if Job hasn't recognized or understood these subtler communications.
Ever felt like God is trying to tell you something, but you're just not getting it? Job certainly did. Elihu steps in to reveal that God's communication isn't a one-off event.
Not Just One Word
Elihu reminds Job (and us!) that God doesn't just speak once. He speaks "once, yea twice" – and this is meant to be understood as multiple times, again and again.
The key is that God is actively engaged in communicating with us, even when we don't feel like we're hearing a booming voice from the heavens.
If God is speaking so much, why do we so often miss it? Elihu points to a universal human struggle: our inability to perceive God's voice.
Why We Don't Perceive
Ask a follow-up
The verse states plainly: "though man does not perceive it." This isn't a judgment, but an observation about our fallen human condition.
Elihu's point is that the problem often lies not with God's communication, but with our capacity, or willingness, to receive it.
