The text notes Ehud was "left-handed," but this is more than just a physical detail; it hints at a specific, perhaps even intentional, trait of the Benjaminite tribe that would later be highlighted for its military uniqueness. This "left-handedness," often described as a weakness in the right hand, paradoxically becomes a key factor in his covert mission, making him unexpectedly formidable.
Then the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After repeatedly falling into sin and oppression under the Moabite king Eglon for eighteen years, the Israelites finally cry out to God for help. In response, the Lord raises up Ehud, a man from the tribe of Benjamin known for his left-handedness, to be their deliverer. Ehud is chosen to personally deliver the tribute Israel is forced to pay to King Eglon.

God's Unconventional Choices
This highlights that God's chosen instruments are not always the most obvious or powerful, but He equips them for His purposes.
Israel sent a 'present' to King Eglon. Was this a bribe, tribute, or something else entirely? What does the word choice reveal?
The Hebrew word used for 'present' offers insight into the complex situation between Israel and Eglon.
More Than Just Tribute
This shows how even acts of apparent submission or obligation can become stages for God's deliverance.

This verse echoes the pattern established earlier in Judges, where the people cried out to the LORD in their distress, and the LORD raised up a deliverer. It highlights the recurring cycle of sin, oppression, and divine intervention that defines this period.
Exodus 3:7-8The cry of the Israelites in Judges 3:15 to the LORD is a direct parallel to the cry of the Israelites in Egypt that God heard. This connection emphasizes that God is attentive to His people's suffering when they turn to Him, even after they've fallen away.
1 Samuel 16:7While the text focuses on Ehud's left-handedness as a physical characteristic, this verse reminds us that God looks at the heart, not outward appearances. This can offer a different perspective on how God chooses and uses unlikely individuals.
Romans 5:8The raising up of Ehud after Israel's repeated sin highlights God's persistent grace. Just as Christ died for us while we were still sinners, God provided a deliverer even when His people were unfaithful.
Judges 20:15-16The mention of Ehud being left-handed connects to the specialized warriors from Benjamin described in this passage, who were also noted for their left-handedness. This suggests a cultural or tribal characteristic that God strategically used.
